Writing to Christian “exiles” scattered throughout modern-day Turkey, Peter envisions the church as God’s true Israel sojourning in foreign land. Peter exhorts this spiritually and socially marginalized community not to aim for cultural relevance but for faithfulness to Jesus. He reminds his readers that gospel hope produces enduring optimism that shines out through personal holiness, Christian attitudes toward authority, and perseverance in suffering.
Peter tells the church that Christ’s suffering, death, resurrection, and ascension stand as the paradigm for believers’ lives. He encourages the Christians to endure suffering and persecution (1 Pet. 1:6–7; 2:18–20; 3:9, 13–17; 4:1–4, 12–19; 5:9) as those who have given themselves entirely to God (1 Pet. 4:19) and know that he will vindicate them. At the consummation, God’s people will certainly enjoy the Lord’s promised salvation.

Edmund P. Clowney
Bible Speaks Today Series

A gem with rich insight. Mathison says that “page for page, it is by far the most helpful commentary on 1 Peter.” Clowney believes no true Christian can escape at least a measure of suffering for Christ’s sake. He argues that Peter, out of his firsthand knowledge, shows us what Jesus’s cruciform life means for believers who must take their cross and follow him.

Paul J. Achtemeier
Hermeneia
Fortress Press, 1996
Achtemeier’s comprehensive and strong work demonstrates careful scholarship. He regularly zeros in on the central issues of the biblical text in the body of the book, and he includes a host of footnotes for readers to traverse at their own preferred pace. Note that Achtemeier argues that the letter is pseudonymous and that it dates to the 80s or 90s. Nevertheless, readers will appreciate his clear writing and admirable exegesis.
