An Introduction to New Testament Christology

Written by Raymond E. Brown Reviewed By Stanley E. Porter

This is an excellent little book. Brown has written an introduction to Christology that usefully surveys the various schools of thought, addresses many of the most important issues in the current debate, and shows how a scholarly assessment of the evidence can also be reconcilable with informed and intelligent Christian faith. Brown does not hesitate to say when the evidence does not go as far as he would like it to, but he does not shy away from defending traditional orthodox positions either. Although much of the discussion reflects Brown’s sensitivity to issues in the Catholic Church, this is in no way a hindrance to benefiting from the volume. It is thoroughly documented with reference both to primary sources, including the NT and a variety of Jewish sources, and to scholarly opinion.
